A COUNCIL is among the first to sign a contract designed to ensure young people get the maximum benefit from work placements.
Darlington Borough Council's tourism team has signed the contract with Liverpool's John Moore's University, and Emma Potter, a final year Batchelor of Arts honours degree student in leisure and tourism, who lives in Darlington.
As part of the contract, employers must make every effort to understand the learning needs and educational objectives of each student.
This includes interviewing the students and treating them as they would any other new employee, involving them in a comprehensive induction programme and making sure they are aware of company policy.
Emma's main task over the next five weeks will be to carry out a survey of people who use the town's tourist information centre.
Drew Li, industrial liaison lecturer at the university, who is Emma's tutor, said: "The code of practice is similar to our own. Both ensure that the student's experience whilst on placement is safe, productive, consistent and enjoyable.
"We are pleased to be involved with Darlington Borough Council and look forward to working with other local authorities and organisations."
