PLANS for a second bungalow in the grounds of a house have been refused, amid claims that with the traffic situation there is "an accident waiting to happen".
The proposal for the rear of 5 Kelgate Terrace, Stainton, was discussed at a meeting of Middlesbrough Borough Council's planning committee on Friday.
Before the meeting councillors had visited the site, where another bungalow is nearing completion.
The plan for a second bungalow attracted a petition bearing 45 signatures when it was submitted by applicant DK Dennison. But a report to the committee recommended its approval, based on the findings of an earlier appeal by the applicant. After councillors tried to block plans for the first bungalow, Mr Dennison had their decision overturned.
Councillors and residents responded angrily to the recommendation at the meeting. A resident said: "The residents were shocked to hear that Mr Dennison had even applied for permission for the second dwel-ling, as we were led to believe he would not be allowed to build any more. Strait Lane can't cope with the current traffic."
Councillor John McPartland said: "This is one of the most dangerous corners I have ever seen in a small village."
Councillors voted to reject the plan
