PLANS for a supermarket have taken a step closer to being implemented by winning councillors' approval.
Proposals for a Safeway store to the north of the Parkway Centre, Coulby Newham, were discussed by Middlesbrough Borough Council's planning committee on Friday.
The development, which would replace the Safeway branch in the Parkway Centre, includes 400 car park spaces and a cycleway and footpath linked with the bus terminus. Customers would access the store via an entrance adjacent to the Chinese restaurant.
In a report to the council, Safeway's planning consultants state: "The proposals will directly support the Government's objective of sustaining and enhancing town centre shopping at Coulby Newham.
"The scheme will directly result in the enhancement of food shopping."
Councillors gave conditional approval to the proposal, which will now be passed to the Government office for the North-East for a final decision
