A £14.5m road is being heralded as the way ahead in part of the North-East.

The Skelton and Brotton bypass, in east Cleveland, the biggest engineering project undertaken by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council in its five-year lifetime, has been completed.

Ashok Kumar, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, will open the three-and-a-half mile road on Friday.

Work on the relief road started four years ago this month.

Councillor Sylvia Szintai, lead councillor for the environment and infrastructure, said: "We can see the road providing a significant number of benefits. It will take traffic, especially heavy lorries, away from the towns of Saltburn and Brotton, enhance the environment of those towns, and also contribute to the overall area's industrial regeneration."
