BIG-hearted workers at a North-East company are game for anything when it comes to charity.

Inspired by one-time Middlesbrough footballer and motor neurone sufferer Willie Maddren, who died last August, staff at Ravenstock Tam have raised £2,080 for research into the disease.

Representatives of the 60-strong workforce at the firm in South Bank, Middlesbrough, will hand over a cheque for £2,080 to the Motor Neurone Disease Association, at the Cellnet Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough, during Saturday's match between Boro and Manchester City.

Each year, the employees of the firm, which supplies work site cabins, choose a charity to help.

Tele sales manager Claire Land said: "It usually starts at Christmas time. People here dig deep and meant we started off with £300.

"Over the past 12 months we have done many events.

"At Easter, we had an Easter egg raffle. We'll raffle anything and everything we can,'' she said.

When employee Joanne Grey left work to have a baby - subsequently named Thomas - colleagues organised a guess the baby's weight competition.

Catherine Darlow, the daughter of regional manager, Ken, was roped in to run the Great North Run for Motor Neurone.

Walks were organised, including a 15-mile trek along the banks of the Tees, with members of staff either paying for the privilege or raising sponsorship money.

"You have to be highly motivated," said Claire, who said the workers are now going to go all out to raise money for the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow appeal
