DAY centre clients in Spennymoor are helping to put a group of disabled Russian people on the road.
Young members of Spennymoor Day Centre's Kaleidoscope Group, who all have a physical disability or sensory impairment, hope to send two adapted buses to County Durham's twin area of Kostroma.
They have been exchanging letters with the White Dolphin Group, in Kostroma, where disabled adults have no proper transport or day-care provision.
People over 16 rely on volunteer groups like the White Dolphins, who meet in private houses and use public transport.
Now Durham County Council has donated two 28-seater buses which are no longer in service, after an approach by Spennymoor Day Centre driver John Hind.
The Kaleidescope Group has until June to raise enough money to restore them and ship them to Russia with a selection of spare parts and other gifts.
The group is selling raffle tickets, and charity nights are being held on February 27, at the Holy Family Social Club, Darlington, and Spennymoor Football Club, on March 2.
Anyone who would like to support the fund is asked to contact Spennymoor Day Centre on (01388) 818982.
