A DEALER has been fined a total of £24,000 yesterday for making false claims about cars he was selling.

Michael Walker, trading as Acklam Car Centre, Middlesbrough, pleaded guilty to 24 breaches of trades descriptions when he appeared before Teesside magistrates.

He was fined £1,000 on each charge and ordered to pay costs of £739.

The charges ranged from false claims that cars were RAC inspected to claims of a 15 per cent discount on cars, when investigations by Middlesbrough Borough Council officials showed prices had remained the same - and in two cases had risen by £300.

Another charge to which he pleaded guilty was a claim that a car had 29,000 miles on the clock since new, when in fact it had travelled 36,000 miles
