MILLIONS of pounds of extra funding could be heading to Stockton thanks to a newly signed agreement.
Stockton Borough Council has signed a Public Service Agreement (PSA) to provide better services for residents.
The agreement could secure up to £6.5m extra funding in return for improvements such as better exam results, cleaner streets and reduced crime.
Stockton is one of 20 local authorities across the country to be picked to pilot the PSA scheme.
The council leader, Councillor Bob Gibson, said: "Stockton's commitment to PSAs will mean a focus on real outcomes, more jobs, less crime, better education results and better housing.
"The fact that Stockton has been chosen to pilot PSAs is recognition of our delivery of quality services to the people of the borough.
"These agreements mean we are now committed to continuing and improving on our proven track record."
To help the council reach its targets, the Government will provide it with a £1m improvement fund as well as £1m for housing improvements.
If it reaches its goals it will get an extra £4.4m at the end of the three year agreement.
