A CALL for a block on imports of German beef was made on Tuesday.

Mr Ben Gill, president, condemned Germany's recent breaches of EC regulations on BSE and called for an immediate check on German control procedures.

Meat containing banned spinal cord has been imported into Britain several times in recent weeks.

Mr Gill said Germany was flagrantly failing to enforce a law British farmers had adhered to for several years.

Mr Gill called for a full and immediate - "and I mean immediate" he stressed - audit of German control procedures. If the European Commission was not totally satisfied, it should stop German beef exports.

Mr Gill believed in a European beef market but it must have robust control systems and there must be fair play.
