GARDENING students are celebrating exam success.

The 12 adults, who attend the Bishopwearmouth Horticultural Nursery run by Sunderland City Council's social services department, have achieved NVQ Level One in amenity horticulture.

They received their certificates from social services director John Marsden at a buffet lunch held in their honour.

Ten of the students will now study for an NVQ Level Two in crop production.

The centre, run as a day centre for adults with learning disabilities, has won prizes at the Gateshead Flower Show for the past two years and received a rarely-presented discretionary award in the Northumbria in Bloom competition.

Mr Marsden said: "The department is very proud of the work of the nursery centre and in particular the way it has enabled some of our service users to gain a nationally recognised qualification.

"I am delighted to present these awards and wish those who are going on to a further qualification every success.
