THE wraps have come off a modified tourism strategy for Richmondshire - just a few weeks after the local authority was stung by criticism of its policies.

A team of Government inspectors judged services for visitors in the district as "fair" but unlikely to improve, unless the district council was prepared to review its facilities.

At the time, the rating angered the authority, which had won awards and was adamant its record should speak for itself.

But, nevertheless, a new action plan was unveiled this week, listing projects planned for the next 12 months.

Among the initiatives are random shopper and customer satisfaction surveys, more training for volunteer staff who man the district's tourist information centres, research into local views of the service, and partnerships with other agencies involved in the industry.
