MOWDEN Park Rugby Club have rallied to support a former player confined to a wheelchair after suffering a serious spinal injury.

Jim Upton, 37, who was born in Richmond, was injured in an accidental collision with a teammate while playing for Old Caterhamians in Surrey, where he now lives with his wife.

Jim joined Mowden Park in Darlington at the age of 15 and played for the colts and senior sides for nine years. After moving south he played more than 100 games for Marlow RFC first team and was a member of the Buckinghamshire county squad. He joined Old Caterhamians, who are also taking part in the appeal, in 1999 and suffered the injury in April last year.

Although covered by insurance, this will go mainly on providing a suitably modified bungalow for Jim.

Mowden Park are holding collections at home matches to raise money for his other needs, including a motorised wheelchair, while anyone wishing to make a donation can do so to: DMP Jim Upton Trust Fund, c/o G F Nevill, 44 Leith Rd, Darlington DL3 8BG.
