ARMED police were called in after a teenager robbed a man at gunpoint as he walked home from the pub.
Detective Inspector John Watts said the victim, who has not been named, was confronted as he was walking in Otto Terrace to Eden House Road, in Sunderland, at 11.25pm on Thursday.
The youth, aged between 13 and 16 years old, pointed a handgun at the man and demanded cash.
Det Insp Watts said: "It could in all probability have been an air-pistol, but we could not take a risk.
"For that reason armed officers responded to the call and searched the area."
Police have appealed for witnesses, in particular a taxi driver who was seen to be passing by at the time.
The youth has been described as 5ft 6in, with light brown hair and of skinny build. He was wearing a light hooded jacket and dark trousers.
Anyone with information has been asked to call 0191-454 7555, extension 66143.
