THREE dentists in the region have shown they really know the drill for success.
They are among the first in the UK to be accredited under a programme from Denplan, a dental healthcare provider.
The programme has been designed to help independent dentists to develop better relationships with their patients through good communication.
It comes as a result of studies which showed that patients who formed good relationships with their dentists were less anxious about check-ups. They also felt more motivated to take preventative measures to improve their oral health.
Newly-accredited dentist Graeme Dentith, of the Metcalf House Practice, in Durham, said: "This programme has given me the opportunity to build and establish a new kind of relationship with my patients, which should lead to positive improvements in their oral health.
"I think it is important for dentists to work hard to improve all aspects of the relationship with their patients, not just clinically, but also personally through better dialogue and support."
Other dentists in the area who have been accredited are Brian Lacey, of Darlington, and Simon Andrews, of Middlesbrough.
The programme is designed to help patients understand how their teeth and gums change over time. It also shows people how to manage their oral health in partnership with their dentist, and the reasons for any treatment required
