Seventy people from day centres, schools and playschemes in west Middlesbrough have worked with artists to produce designs for flags as part of the Linkages project.
Their handiwork went on view at various sites in the area.
The participants, from Macmillan College, Whinney Banks Infant and Junior School, and Newport Wednesday Club Senior Citizens, produced notes, drawings and recordings, which were used to create 12 flags depicting impressions of the area.
Starting in March, the flags will be used as inspiration for a dance and theatre piece.
Middlesbrough Borough Council's arts and development officer, Jenny Hall, said: "This project has been a great success, with people taking part in the design of the flags.
"Phase two will be wonderful, and the theatre piece will be toured around community venues in west Middlesbrough, so that as many people as possible can see what's been achieved."
Any group in west Middlesbrough that wishes to take part in the dance and theatre production can ring Ms Hall on (01642) 515629.
