PLANS to launch a scheme that will help young children in east Durham get a better start in life have been welcomed.

The Government has announced that the area - one of the most deprived in the country - is to get its own Sure Start programme.

Sure Start schemes are being set up throughout the country in deprived areas, and help children under the age of four as well as their parents.

Set up as partnerships between various bodies, groups and parents, they aim to help youngsters so that they can reach their potential when they start school. The Government has announced 66 new schemes will be started.

The schemes provide support and advice and help in important areas such as health, play and childcare facilities.

Easington District Council leader Alan Napier said: "We are absolutely delighted that the area is to benefit from Sure Start.

"We welcome the news and we will be working with our partners and other agencies to prepare the young people of the district for new job opportunities and better prospects.

"Easington Council is delighted that the Government, and the appropriate organisations, have recognised the particular needs of this district, which we have argued so long for in the past."
