STAFF at a college in the region will stage a one-day strike today.
Employees at Teesside Tertiary College, in Middlesbrough, will take action as part of a dispute over their 2000 pay award.
Members of the Unison and Nafthe unions rejected an offer of 3.3 per cent, which had been increased from 2.2 per cent, because the proposal was only to implement the rise from December 2000, when it is usually introduced in August.
A Unison spokesman said: "The rise of 3.3 per cent, from August 2000, was agreed nationally. This is what we in Middlesbrough want and deserve."
Staff will picket the college's two bases, at Martin Campus and Douglas Street, starting at 7.30am.
Stuart Ingleson, principal of the college, said: "With the support of the governing body, most staff received a pay award of 3.3 per cent or £330 prior to Christmas.
"I am disappointed that a vote by 69 out of the 546 staff who work for the college has resulted in industrial action."
