THE money donated to Skerne Park Community Centre will be used to fund two part-time caf coordinators.
One is Mel Jones, who lives in Skerne Park and started working as a volunteer in the caf in June 1999.
At first she helped out one day a week, but that gradually built up until she was working there on a regular basis.
When the part-time caf coordinator's post became vacant, Mel applied and was appointed in June last year.
Working in the caf has built up her confidence and enabled her to complete a number of training courses including basic and intermediate food hygiene, health and safety, disability awareness and an introduction to supervisory management.
Mel said: "Getting the job at the community caf has been a terrific boost for my self-esteem.
"I now have the confidence and skills to organise events and prepare a wider range of food for the caf.
"Working closely with Barbara is a great opportunity to put into practice the team work and communication skills that I have learnt, thanks to the community caf."
