THE peace of a town was shattered yesterday when youths, some armed with wooden sticks, fought a running battle in the streets.
A 17-year-old girl, who was assaulted and thrown to the ground, was taken to Dryburn Hospital, Durham following the fracas, involving about a dozen people in Stanley, County Durham, yesterday.
The extent of her injuries is not known.
Police arrived within minutes to break up the fight, captured on camera by The Northern Echo from its offices, at about 4pm.
Inspector Roy Smith, of Stanley police, said last night: "We haven't received any complaints from any individuals involved in the fracas.
"One girl was taken to hospital.
"We are seeking to get hold of her to see whether she can identify any of the other people involved and whether she wishes to make an official complaint."
Insp Smith said residents and businesses had complained about youths causing nuisance in the town in the evenings and this was getting police attention.
He added: "From a public disorder point of view, we are trying to stem problems wherever we can.
"We will be investigating the circumstances of this incident.
