A COUPLE who have been refused planning permission to develop a fantasy wood featuring elves and goblins at a beauty spot are to appeal against the decision.
Harry and Val Davison have been told by Wear Valley District Council planning officials that their Elfinwood project, on the outskirts of Crook, would be a traffic hazard and a danger to children because of old mine workings.
Last night, the Davisons, from Howdon, North Tyneside, said they would appeal to the Department of the Environment against the refusal.
The couple say they have spent £30,000 on the project, based on Tolkien's classic story The Lord of the Rings.
They say they have received messages of support from local people and are planning to draw up a petition to back their appeal.
