THINGS that go bump in the night have failed to spook the staff at a North-East shop.
"George" the resident ghost at Pagan and McQuade Opticians at Winpenny House, in Stockton's High Street, has been at the address for as long as anyone can remember.
A psychic was called to the shop five years ago to investigate strange occurrences.
Over the years, staff have noticed equipment being mysteriously turned on and off, a strange smell suddenly appearing, and some workers who have been left alone claimed they have been watched.
The psychic said that there was a spirit in the building, but reassured staff that it was friendly.
Investigations into the history of the building revealed it had previously been a gentlemen's outfitters, and George worked there.
Staff now think all the strange activities are down to George, including the smell thought to be the hat glue used in the men's store at the time.
Manageress Nicky Spencer has urged customers not to be frightened by the ghostly presence of George.
She said: "There is nothing sinister about our mysterious ghost, he just likes to keep a check of what is going on around the building.
The refurbishment, which got under way last week, aims to make George feel even more at home.
Ms Spencer said: "While things are changing, elements of our history that mark our accomplishments over a number of years will still remain, including our ghostly friend."
The new-look store will be open on Friday.
