THE first ship to be built on the Tyne for seven years was launched yesterday.
The£10m ferry The Leka was launched at the Cammell Laird yard, at Hebburn, South Tyneside yesterday.
Senior Cammell Laird staff said it was a major milestone for North-East shipbuilding.
A company spokesman said the ferry was the first ship launched from the south banks of the river for 19 years.
The ferry will go to Norway after tests.
Cammell Laird is working on a second ferry, also for the Norwegian market
