A North-East theatre was wished a happy birthday by an international star yesterday.
The Theatre Royal, in Newcastle, celebrated its 164th birthday when the former Three Degrees lead singer Sheila Ferguson released 164 balloons to commemorate the occasion.
The event is to become part of an annual birthday tradition, and was followed by a lunch with the cast of the musical Soul Train.
Oscar nominee and one of the North-East's top writers Lee Hall, who wrote Billy Elliot, wrote a prologue for last night's performance of Soul Train.
Soul Train is showing until Saturday, February 24.
