A course for coroners' officers has been launched.
The two-week course has been devised by Teesside University, to equip officers with a sound knowledge of the laws and procedures governing the profession.
Delivered by the Centre for Police Research and Education, it is believed to be the first of its kind in the country.
Psychologists and a pathologists provide input, with the bulk of the teaching being delivered by Denis Clark, a former police detective chief inspector with 20 years' experience.
He said: "The emphasis is on making sure the officers know the law and procedures.
"We also offer practical insights into new issues, for example, the impact of human rights legislation, and grief management is explored.
