DRIVERS parking illegally in Darlington may face stiffer fines in the future.
The cabinet meeting of Darlington Borough Council agreed proposals yesterday to change the penalty charges in car parks in the town.
If someone has illegally parked in a council-run car park they could face a £50 fine.
At present, the fines stand at £30, falling to a discounted charge of £10 if the fine is paid within seven days.
It was proposed at the meeting yesterday to change that to a £50 fine, with the fine falling to £25 if paid within 14 days.
Study of other authorities in the region showed that Darlington's levels of fines were well below most of the other councils.
If the rates are ratified by full council on Tuesday, the charges will be introduced on April 1.
