WORK has started on a project to improve road safety for pedestrians and drivers in North Hartlepool.
The improvements are being carried out in King Oswy Drive, after consultation with residents.
A toucan crossing will be built to replace a zebra crossing near Henry Smith School, which is split on both sides of the road.
Toucan crossings can be used by pedestrians and cyclists, and feature illuminated bike symbols as well as the traditional red and green man.
A cycle track which runs near the school will be extended to lead down to the crossing, and pedestrian railings will be fitted on both sides of the road.
Signs will be put up to warn motorists of the crossing, and the road up to it will be given an anti-skid treatment.
The work, which will cost £40,000, was initiated in response to concerns about the number of children crossing the road as they moved between lessons.
Councillor Edna Wright said: "This is excellent news for local people. The project will help create a safer environment for pedestrians and road users alike.
"This is something which residents have been concerned about for some considerable time, and I wholeheartedly welcome the start of the project."
