TWO families in a North-East town still have not returned to their homes, four months after they were flooded.

At a meeting of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council on Thursday, Councillor Valerie Halton told members about the families, in Guisborough.

She said they were the forgotten victims of the flooding which devastated many areas in November.

Coun Halton said it was right that the council's efforts were concentrated in Skinningrove, where the whole village suffered.

But she said that many homes in Guisborough had also been flooded, and that two families still had not returned to their homes.

The families, who wish to remain anonymous, have been staying with friends and relatives while their carpets are replaced, walls are replastered and heaters try to dry out the rooms.

Coun Halton said there had been a great deal of misery for Guisborough people.

"While everybody understands the immediate efforts had to be concentrated in Skinningrove, it is a fact that very little attention has been given to the very serious and extensive damage which Guisborough suffered," she said.

"Many homes were flooded, 11 in one street alone, and some businesses were interrupted by water damage."

Councillor Dave McLuckie, lead member for community safety, said there were more than 900 homes throughout the borough affected by the flooding and there were still some people in east Cleveland who had not returned home following the earlier July floods.

He said: "I sympathise with the people who are not back in their homes. We are looking to see how we can prevent further flooding. Redcar and Cleveland Council is doing all it can and I will be asking Coun Halton for the details so I can get in touch with officers about these people.
