A SCHEME to help homeless people in Darlington was given a £5,000 boost during a presentation headed by MP Alan Milburn.
The Health Secretary and Darlington MP visited the 700 Club to speak to young homeless people who have benefited from the 16-bed hostel, in Grange Road.
The donation was made by Barclays to provide the hostel with new bedding, furniture and carpets, and comes seven years after the club was opened.
After opening as a club in 1994, the scheme went on to become a hostel in 1997, after the building renovated and refurbished.
Since it was opened, the club has helped hundreds of homeless people in the town and has received support and funding from numerous organisations and companies in the town.
Ray Parkin, manager of the 700 Club, said: "With the hostel having been open now for approaching seven years, this generous gift from Barclays couldn't have come at a better time.
"We have always valued a pleasant environment as an important background to the work we do and decent furniture in residents' rooms is a vital part of this."
