A COUNCIL is considering changing a decision not to allow the sale of fresh meats on its markets.

Two traders have called on Hambleton District Council to review its restrictions on the sale of fresh meat.

The authority decided four years ago to allow the sale of a range of packed cooked meats and delicatessen goods, but not fresh meat.

Environmental services director Steve Quartermain said amending the conditions would benefit the council's promotion of markets and allow more farmers to get involved.

He said: "The issue with regard to competition to local butchers is one which is not applied in respect of other types of stall, such as greengrocers, and it can be argued that the condition is an unfair restriction in competitive trade.

"Further to this, it can also be considered that the condition in prohibiting the sale of fresh meat on the market undermines the promotion and vitality of the markets.

"The council also has a duty to promote the economy of the area and in the discussions with the farmers it was suggested previously that they come on our markets.

"However, because one of their main commodities is meat, the condition prevented them from doing so.
