A BOGUS official stole about £1,000 from a pensioner's home after claiming to be a social worker.
She told the man she was investigating his gas bill. Once inside, she made an excuse to go upstairs then left in a hurry.
When the pensioner went upstairs, he noticed drawers open and discovered money had been stolen.
The theft occurred between 2.50pm and 4.30pm last Wednesday, in Dumfries Street, Darlington.
Detective Sergeant Phil Curtis, of Darlington police, said people, especially the elderly or vulnerable, should take precautions when receiving callers at their homes. Identification should be checked, particularly when the caller is unexpected.
The thief was described as in her mid-20s, white, 5ft 8in, of slim build, with light brown hair, sharp features and a particularly prominent nose.
She was wearing a long, dark coat and carrying a clipboard and pen.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Darlington police on (01325) 467681.
