THE Bishop of Durham gave his blessing yesterday, to Fairtrade Fortnight - two weeks of activities designed to promote a better deal for growers and producers in the developing world.
The Right Reverend Michael Turnbull enjoyed Fairtrade coffee and muesli as he joined sixth-formers from Chester-le-Street's Pelton Roseberry School for a special breakfast.
While at the town's Co-op supermarket, the bishop also sampled bananas grown under decent conditions for developing world employees.
Meanwhile, students at the City of Sunderland College will be doing their bit for National Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from March 5 to 18.
Their human rights group, led by lecturer Peter Mulligan, will be giving away chocolate, coffee and tea to raise awareness about Fairtrade products.
Using giant inflatable bananas to grab shoppers' attention, members of the group will, tomorrow, take to the Shiney Row Centre, near Sunderland, to encourage people to look for the brand.
