A SCHOOL is planning to celebrate its 90th anniversary by forming an association for ex-pupils.
Tanfield School, near Stanley, will reach the milestone next year and it intends to mark the occasion by launching The Tanfield Association.
The association will hold regular meetings and social events, and produce a newsletter for its members.
The school, which has 650 pupils and 35 teaching staff, began life as Tanfield High Elementary School, in October 1912.
Its name later changed to the Alderman Wood School, Stanley Grammar School and, in 1977, it became Tanfield Comprehensive.
Famous former pupils include cricketing hero Colin Milburn and soccer star Barry Venison, who played for Sunderland, Newcastle and Liverpool and is now a pundit on ITV's soccer show On The Ball.
Alan Ramshaw, a sports teacher who is coordinating the association, said the school had a good record of sporting success.
He said it also had a strong family atmosphere. "Many of our teachers, including me, were pupils here.'
