Durham League

Middlesbrough Mavericks completed a First Division double over neighbours University of Teesside, but only just, winning 80-77.

University had the edge for three-quarters of the contest. Tunde Falade was back for his first game for some time and baskets from him helped stretch a 19-17 first quarter lead into one of 42-37 to the University by half-time.

Ian Viveash kept the scoreboard ticking over for Mavericks but he could do nothing to stop Matt Ellis and Rob Rough from extending the students advantage to 65-52 with ten minutes to play.

The final quarter belonged to Mavericks. Wayne Bailey joined Viveash in crashing the University boards to net 14 points without reply and Mavericks were in the lead for the first time at 66-65 and was extended to six points before a frantic full-court press from the students almost brought it back.

Viveash and Bailey led the way for Mavericks with 25 and 21 points each, Martin Wills added 16. Falade and Rough collected 20 and 18 for University, Ellis netted 15.

Norton swept to a comfortable 93-73 success against East Durham and Houghall College A at Peterlee.

The first-half was even. John Harding started well for College, but Steve Butler hit 23 of the points which gave Norton a 44-40 cushion at the interval. The third quarter was a shooting contest between John Bergin (College) and Glen Urban (Norton) and when it closed Norton had a 65-58 advantage. Dave Murphy opened the final quarter with a pair of three-point baskets for Norton and ten unanswered points later they had breathing space at 75-58. The rest of the quarter was Norton at their best as College folded.

Butler led the Norton scoring with 32 points, Urban was not far behind on 24, Murphy and Sam Butterworth chipped in with 14 and ten. Harding and Bergin matched each other with 21 apiece for East Durham College, Ian Barrow hit 13.

In the Women's Handicap Cup quarter-final tie Durham Knights took advantage of a generous 20 points plus two points a point start to win their first game of the season 98-74 against Sunderland Nissan.

Anna Critchley and Liz Burton scored regularly for Knights and at the interval the game was beyond Sunderland at 58-29. Lisa and Liz Burton did best for Knights with 30 and 20 points apiece and only Beryl Davison was at anything like her best with 32 points for Sunderland.
