YOUNGSTERS cleaned the beach at Saltburn yesterday, as part of a scheme to encourage volunteering.

They were working for the Middlesbrough Millennium Volunteers Project, created for the Millennium Volunteers Award of Excellence scheme.

As part of the project, the youngsters had to think about the location for the beach clean-up, give consideration to health and safety issues involved, contact people who have taken part in beach clean-ups before, and order the equipment necessary for the operation.

The group worked closely with the Saltburn 500 Club, which has adopted the beach, and local surfers.

The club's Miranda Kelly met the group on Saturday to offer her advice. The Millennium Volunteers Award of Excellence scheme was launched by Tony Blair to encourage young people to take part in voluntary activities for the benefit of other people.

Youngsters can choose from a range of volunteering opportunities, developing skills that should prove useful in later life.

Volunteering opportunities include sports coaching, fundraising, website design and environmental awareness.

People who complete 200 hours of volunteering within a 12-month period receive an award that is recognised by universities and employers as a valuable asset for a young person's CV.
