A community centre could be built in Northallerton after a meeting between residents and council officials.
The town's Hambleton Community Centre faced possible closure last year as the district council considered several options over its future.
Centre users and senior council staff have now met to discuss the possibility of building better facilities elsewhere in the town.
Council leader Councillor June Imeson said they had never proposed closing the centre without making provision for its users.
She said: "Our discussions have been to seek user views on progress so far, so we can determine whether to proceed to a fuller feasibility study."
Coun Imeson said although positive progress had been made, it would be some time before a fully-costed scheme could be presented for consultation
