A LEADING North-East museum has offered its top job to an unnamed candidate following the early retirement of its suspended director.

The identity of the new chief director of Beamish Museum, County Durham, will not be revealed until references have been checked later this week.

The previous director, Peter Lewis, 62, was suspended last September over an allegation that letters for the Friends of Beamish - the charity which supports the museum - did not reach it.

An investigation into the claim by the joint committee of councils which fund the museum was abandoned after Mr Lewis announced his retirement. The committee had appointed deputy director John Gall, 53, as acting director.
