AN Asian women's group has received a Lottery boost for the second year running.
For the past few years, a group of young women called Anokhee, meaning the only one, has organised educational trips and events and English classes for its members' mothers.
Now, for the second year running, it has secured a Lottery grant worth £4,820.
The group plans to use the money to enrich the lives of Asian women living in Thornaby.
Group member Riaz Khan said: "We are very pleased to be given the award. This is very important for the older generation. It will provide the chance for ethnic minority women to access and enjoy local activities and centres, and also cultural activities and outings."
Already planned, is a trip to the annual Asian Mela festival, in Bradford, the Blackpool Illuminations and the Jorvik Museum, in York.
"We are also considering swimming, keep fit, line dancing and a party to celebrate Eid, our equivalent of Christmas," said Mrs Khan.
Pat Lowes, a senior awards officer, said: "Anokhee in Thornaby is an ideal scheme for support, and we would like to see many more groups applying."
