LUNCH times are becoming high-tech affairs in North-East schools where pupils no longer have to pay by cash.
Swipe card technology means youngsters will no longer have to carry money in their pockets and risk losing it or having it stolen.
The new system in Sunderland also means that meals are served faster because pupils do not have to pay at a till and they have more time to eat.
Washington School has become the first school in the Sunderland City Council area to get the technology, with Farringdon, Houghton Kepier and Hetton schools to follow.
Headteacher Ian Lane said: "We are delighted to be the first school in Sunderland to use the new system, which signals an advancement in modern technology in schools.
"I am sure the system will be a success. It shows that we are moving with the times.
