A CAMPAIGN has been launched to encourage more men and boys to visit libraries in Hartlepool.
When it comes to library membership, they are a traditionally under-represented group - but the "lads and dads" promotion aims to change that.
Displays of selected books and promotional material will be in the town's branch libraries and the central library throughout the month.
Posters have also been produced to ensure people know about the campaign.
Library service area manager Ann Russell said: "Statistics show that 73 per cent of people in Hartlepool actually use libraries, and that is an encouraging figure. However, men and boys are under-represented compared to other groups.
"Surveys of non-users have been carried out in the past and one idea put forward was that libraries should open on Sundays.
"This suggests people don't have time to browse, due to other commitments, so perhaps we need to make it easier for them to find just what they want.
"Another reason for the low level of membership among dads and lads is that they are simply unaware of the diverse and exciting range of services and materials our libraries are able to offer. Hopefully, this campaign will put it right.
