Hathaway Auckland and District League

The only game to survive last week's snow and frost was the Auckland Charity Cup semi-final between Darlington RA and Cockfield. RA got off to a great start when they scored three times in the first 15 minutes through Steven Walker, Paul Adamson and an own goal.

Cockfield had a chance to come back into the game when they were awarded two penalties either side of half-time, but they missed both.

They did score a consolation goal late in the game through Andrew Bowes.

Darlington RA will play the winners of the Witton Park v DSRM game in the final at Kingsway on April 9.

Over-40s League

Last Saturday the wintry weather caused the postponement of all fixtures. The further setback leaves only 12 Saturdays until May 26 which means that midweek games will be necessary in order to complete both league and cup fixtures.

At present the semi-finals of five cups are due to be played on March 17. The Kenny Ball Cup has yet to complete the second round.

Clubs well behind with their league games include Premier side Steels who have 12 league games plus cup ties. Division One sides Ferryhill Greyhound, Byker St Peters and Barnes Hotel all have 12 fixtures to complete while in Division Two Wallsend Rising Sun have a backlog of 11 games. In Division Three, North Shields Spring Gardens are ten behind.

Division Four sides Consett and North Shields Vets have 14 games and Hebburn DT 13.

The inevitable midweek games always create problems in this League as many players have work commitments. The League say that secretaries seeking further postponements so that they can field their strongest sides will be find their excuses will fall on deaf ears and all matches will be played as scheduled because of the backlog.

Classic Trophies UK Middlesbrough Sunday League

Two games survived the frost, one in the league, the other in the cup.

The cup game, though not a classic, was well contested by Lingdale YCC who switched home advantage to Smiths Dock Park to play D and E Locksmiths who won 4-2. A fairly even first 20 minutes was marred when Steven Loughran received a bad head injury for D and E causing a reshuffle in midfield. Towards the end of the first period D and E made the breakthrough when Martin Shackleton scored a header and within a minute crossed for Anthony Price to double the score. Two minutes into the second half David McGowan made it three to D and E, but this stirred Lingdale who hit back when Derek Pearson finished off a sweeping move. A penalty to Lingdale was dispatched by Martin Marsh and Lingdale were back in it and a draw was on the cards until MoM Shackleton put Andrew Harland through for D and E's fourth.

The league game was between Parklands and Popeyes B ending in a 4-1 victory for Parklands. Both teams found it difficult to master the conditions, but Parklands managed to go in a goal up at the break. Popeyes levelled when Colin McMenamin headed in but a late rally from Parklands saw them hit a further three goals. Highlight of the game was Carl Chillingworth's hat-trick and a 25-yard screamer from Steven Lennox.

Darlington Church and Friendly League

THE league programme was reduced to a single fixture because of frozen pitches. This took place at Hurworth where Otter and Fish entertained Aycliffe Saints, the game proving to be very tight and competitive.

The visitors struck first midway through the first half, Richard Cave scoring, and held the lead until the 65th minute when Darren Tate hit an equaliser, giving the home team a little more impetus and they gradually got on top for the final ten minutes to add a further two goals through Tate and Simon Middlemiss to run out 3-1 winners.

Because of the fixtures backlog the league have cancelled Archbold Trophy fixtures for the season and the League Cup put on hold with the hope of fitting it in at the end of the season.

Hambleton Ales Combination

A mixture of frost-bound pitches and games called off because of the danger from foot-and-mouth disease resulted in virtually a complete blank day.

No games were played in divisions one and three and the only match completed was in Division Two where second-placed Topcliffe closed on the leaders with a 4-0 home victory against Blue Star.

This was Topcliffe's ninth successive league win and they are now three points behind leaders Brompton on Swale but have played a game more.
