POLICE officers are undertaking a face-to-face offensive to help to cut a crime wave on a housing estate.

Crime prevention panel members from Langbaurgh police are calling at each of the 350 homes on the Eston Under Nab estate and telling residents of the problem plaguing their streets.

In addition, they are delivering crime prevention packs containing advice from Neighbourhood Watch and the police on how to safeguard property against thieves.

The measures have been prompted by an increase in burglaries on the estate, of which four have been committed in the past fortnight.

Detective Inspector Steve Richards said: "I am committed to reducing the number of house burglaries in the district and this operation is an ideal way of letting communities know not only that a problem exists, but also how to do something about it.

"I would encourage all residents to support Neighbourhood Watch if they are not already a member, and to report anything suspicious to the police."

Ward councillor Ivy Cole said: "I am pleased that Cleveland police has identified this crime and is reacting quickly and effectively.

"By working together, the residents of Eston Under Nab can make a difference and reduce burglary on the estate.
