A YOUNG athlete from Newton Aycliffe will be able to represent his country, thanks to a local company and the town council.
Michael Turnbull, 17, has been selected to represent Great Britain at an international biathle event in South Africa next month.
Biathle is a new sport which consists of a run, followed by a swim, then another run.
Michael, who goes to Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, Darlington, had only a short time to find sponsors.
Great Lakes Manufacturing, at Aycliffe Industrial Park, offered to help.
Company spokesman Jan Presch said: "We saw this as an opportunity where we could assist Michael with his accommodation and air fare."
Great Aycliffe Town Council also helped with a grant of £500.
Councillor Bob Fleming said: "I can't remember any young person from Newton Aycliffe being chosen to represent his country at this level."
