ONE of the North-East's leading tourist attractions is on the look-out for more people to provide a welcome to thousands of visitors each year.
Durham Cathedral already has 350 stewards, but needs more volunteers to help with the work.
Chapter steward Anne Heywood said: "We are always on the look-out for new people. The stewards are the most important part of what is known as the ministry of welcome, which is welcoming visitors.
"Our stewards work different days and at different times.
"Our style is reactive rather than proactive. Our stewards are there to answer questions and make people feel comfortable.
"We have almost 250,000 visitors a year and a human face is needed.''
Anyone interested can find out more by contacting the Chapter Office on 0191-386 4266.
l An exhibition dedicated to voluntary work will be held in the cathedral by the Standing Conference of Voluntary Organisations and Durham Student Community Action starting on Monday, March 19, for two weeks
