NEWCASTLE International Airport has won an award for its positive employment practices for disabled people.
The airport was one of ten organisations in the region to be recognised. The awards, which were presented by the deputy director of the Employment Service, Diane Hedley, enables disabled job seekers to identify which employers in the region welcome their applications.
All ten companies can now display the Positive about Disabled People symbol demonstrating their commitment.
Measures put in place by the airport included the support of an occupational health advisor throughout absence from work due to illness, and the opportunity for people who become disabled to discuss options for returning on modified duties.
Newcastle Airport's personnel manager, Gemma Forster, said: "We are absolutely delighted to receive this award as we are committed to offering employment opportunities to all job seekers and to caring for our employees when they become unwell or develop a disability.
"The introduction of an in-house occupational health section has been instrumental in establishing a new way of caring for our employees by providing support and expertise to help retain those valuable employees and their skills and experience."
* The awards also went to: North Tyneside Magistrates' Court, Northumberland Mental Health Trust, Officers' Club, Bassington; Welwyn Systems, Blyth; Watbus, Ashington; Wellwork, Bellingham; Lynemouth Day Centre, Elaine Rest Home, Lynemouth, and Charlies, of Amble
