A FRESH bid is being made to breathe new life into a disused Durham cinema.
Worcestershire-based Tribecka Estates is the latest company to draw up plans to convert the former Palladium cinema, in Claypath, into a nightspot.
It has submitted a planning application to Durham City Council to use the building as a restaurant and bar and to have dancing and entertainment.
The building, which has also served as a bingo hall, has stood empty for more than ten years. Previous attempts to bring it back into use have run into opposition from residents and council planners.
Last year, real-ale pub chain J D Wetherspoon was refused planning permission for its conversion proposals. The development ran into opposition from residents concerned that it would lead to an increase in late-night trouble.
Councillors were also told that the scheme would have a big impact on the elderly residents of nearby Claypath Court, and that it breached the council's strategy for new pubs and bars.
Roseberry Leisure, of Sunderland, drew up plans in 1999 to convert the Palladium into a leisure complex featuring a restaurant, bars and entertainment for up to 700 people.
However, the company withdrew its application - which also attracted opposition from residents, the police and City of Durham Trust - before councillors were due to consider it.
Planning officials were recommending that planning permission be refused.
