A MOTHER has launched a fundraising campaign in memory of her baby son.
Benson Gillham was just 13 weeks old when he became a victim of cot death, dying in his sleep at his home in Stanley, near Crook.
His mother, Catherine, 24, spoke yesterday of her determination to raise money for research into the syndrome that has claimed so many lives.
She said: "I don't want a mother to go through what I have been through, and if the money we raise can help fund research then it will be worthwhile.
"I didn't know that three babies die a day of cot death. It is something that you read and hear about, and you don't even think it'll happen to you.''
Benson, described as a happy child who was always smiling, was buried at Crook cemetery after a service at St Thomas's Church on Monday.
In the week leading up to Easter Sunday, Miss Gillham and her friends are holding several events to raise money in his memory.
She said: "My family and friends have been absolutely wonderful. My friend Wendy has been my rock."
A marathon darts tournament at the Black Horse pub will start the fundraising on Monday, April 9, and a karaoke charity night will be held there on Easter Sunday.
Miss Gillham, who works at AABAT Taxis in Bishop Auckland, is also looking to local businesses to provide prizes for a raffle.
Anyone who can help should contact her on (01388) 765103.
