FIREFIGHTERS are warning youngsters that they could be putting themselves in danger by setting fire to empty properties on a housing estate.
Fire crews were called to a blaze at Scorton Court, on Redcar's Lakes Estate, yesterday, where residents are being re-housed, although some homes are still occupied.
Two fire engines from Redcar fire station, breathing apparatus and one hose reel were used to put out the blaze in a ground floor flat, which was badly damaged.
Station Officer Dave Firth said he believed juveniles had broken in and set fire to furniture in the lounge. He said it was an increasing problem.
"I don't know what else the council can do. There are metal grills on the windows and we turn up because we assume there could be people in there.
"People could trap themselves in there and smoke can also spread to other properties."
