AN attempt to change the way mayors are elected to serve Ripon has failed.
The move followed a recent row over the selection of mayor-elect Councillor David Harrison, who saw off challenger Councillor David Parnaby.
Councillor Andrew Williams proposed a system in which anyone seeking office would have to notify the town clerk by January 10, and that long-serving councillors should take priority if the post was contested.
Coun Williams, whose proposal for change was backed by fellow Independent councillor Doreen Spence, was defeated by six votes to three, with one abstention.
Ripon City Council spokeswoman Yvonne Covell said the present system involved an informal meeting of all councillors to decided who would be nominated to represent the city.
