A SCHEME to restore gardens dating back hundreds of years has won Heritage Lottery Fund support.
The fund is giving £32,000 to bring The Riverbank Gardens, near Durham Cathedral and Castle, back to their former glory.
The gardens were formed in post-medieval times, but fell into disrepair in the last century.
Durham University, five colleges, the cathedral's Dean and Chapter, and the city and county council's are working on the restoration.
Durham City Council's principal design and conservation officer, Tracey Ingle, said: "The gardens and the city wall are hidden treasures.
"This is the first step of a very exciting initiative to interpret Durham's rich history."
