PLANS to create car parking spaces around a war memorial are to be withdrawn.
South Durham Health Care and NHS Trust submitted plans for the grounds of Darlington Memorial Hospital, at Hollyhurst Road, because of increased demand for parking.
But now the trust is to look at how best it can use existing car parking areas.
Local residents had objected to the plans, believing the memorial and land surrounding it should be left alone.
Mike Hills, 43, of Hollyhurst Road, said: "I feel that the area across the road from where I live is sacrosanct and needs to be left as a war memorial. If anything, it needs to be enhanced."
He said other areas within the grounds would be better for car parking.
Mr Hills said residents would welcome the withdrawal of the plans.
